MARSIS radar data collected over two years of Martian orbits shows that the northern plains of Mars are covered with a low-density material interpreted to be ice-rich sedimentary deposits. The European Space Agency (ESA) reports two oceans have been proposed, including one about 4 billion years ago, and another 3 billion years ago.
